Did You Know Your Energy Company Can Now Cut Off Your Power for 3 Hours a Week?
Since August 2026 the grid operator can schedule rotating power cuts without Government permission. A battery sized for everyday savings, not sold as a backup gadget, can mean you don't notice when the lights go out.
Did you even know that since 13 August 2026 the National Energy System Operator has been able to implement rotating power cuts, area by area, for around three hours at a time, without even needing Government permission? So don’t be surprised when the lights start going out. The bottom line is that we don’t have enough infrastructure to power the UK in an EV and AI-dominated world, and I’m afraid your household lighting will be the first to go.
If you have an EV on the drive, a hot tub in the garden, and an office in the house, you've probably read the headlines in the newspapers about this and sat back wondering two things: whether this will actually happen, and whether a battery would keep the house running if it did.
However, at Household Energy Solutions (HES), we take a much broader Holistic Approach focused not on “Power Cuts” backup, but on whether installing a battery in your house makes economic sense in its own right, because you can store electricity at cheap 9p rates and use it to avoid peak 29p daytime rates. This is a simple arbitrage opportunity that, for most houses, pays for itself in under 5 years and means you won't have to worry about a power cut again, as your battery will step in.
To do this, we have a simple online process where you upload your electricity bill, meter, and consumer unit (fuse board), and we review them, recommend a system size, and introduce an MCS-certified installer to install it, and this is completely FREE as we just get paid a small introduction commission from the installer.
But importantly, unless the potential solutions have a payback of under 7 years, we simply will not recommend them, as we expect all our installed systems to deliver “double” your investment over the system’s 15-year expected life. Funnily enough, happy customers are those saving lots of money, and this is the cheapest marketing ever invented, because they simply love telling other customers to get in touch with us.
How on earth have we got here?
UK Energy planning has frankly been a joke, with both the previous and current Governments focused more on headlines than on implementing the long-term infrastructure investment required to transition from fossil-fuel energy production to wind and solar power, supported by Nuclear Power as the underlying base.
The net result is that nuclear power has declined from 25% in the 1990s to 12.5% as older stations have gone offline, leading to a mad rush to build wind power plants across Scotland without thinking through how we transmit this power to the south of England, where demand is highest. This has led to the ridiculous situation where 40% of our nighttime electricity is wasted by turning off wind turbines or dissipating electricity as heat from local power distribution hubs.
This is why Household Energy aims to give individual households power independence by installing batteries that store this wasted electricity while reducing their bills. However, because each battery carries our bespoke AI programming tools, we aim to link 100,000 home systems together to create a virtual battery with capacity equivalent to that of a nuclear power station, so that this virtual battery solution can store excess wind at night or solar during the day, cutting out waste, reducing household prices and providing resilience against the need to turn off the lights for whole communities
We would love to say we are working closely with the Government, but this would be a lie. To be honest, the Government needs to wake up and ask why it has ceded control of 80% of our electricity supply to businesses owned by France, Germany and Spain. Oh, what a shock. These businesses focus more on making profits than on dealing with the UK Energy Crisis.
How likely are rolling blackouts?
At the moment, we still just about have enough capacity. NESO's early view of this winter, published on 23 June 2026, expects 5.5 GW of spare capacity or 8.8% above peak demand levels, down from 15% last year.
So the rolling black-out procedure is more for unplanned events, such as major storms that take down power lines, than for a planned disruption that needs to happen at this point. But it does not take a genius to realise that with every AI data centre or 1,000 EVs we add to the room, we make this headroom smaller. Given the planned major transmission upgrades are not due to be delivered until 2035, we can all see a major problem looming.
What a battery does, and what it does not do
If you want a household battery to act as a backup system to power your house, it needs to be set up to do this in the first place, and this is where Household Energy Solution offers much more advice than just a quick battery sale or set of solar-based systems that provide no assistance at all as soon as it goes dark
To keep the house running, the system must be specified with a backup output and a changeover arrangement, and this decision must be made before the install, not after. If backup matters to you, say so at the start, because it changes the kit and the wiring.
It is also sensible to slightly over-specify the battery and inverter size, because that means you virtually never use expensive grid electricity and have a full 8 hours of backup power in an emergency.
Whether the extra cost of installation is balanced by a greater degree of household resilience in an increasingly energy-uncertain UK is a debate you can have with us after we have told you the good news about how much money the base system will actually generate for you over its life, because how many other investments have a 5-year payback but a 15-year life, giving 10 years of cut-price energy living?Read more at https://householdenergysolutions.co.uk
